Christopher Williams -
Normative Models
May 5, 2018-July 29, 2018
@ Kestner Gesellschaft, Hanover (DE)
Using his preferred medium of photography and inspired by the industrial culture of late capitalism, Christopher Williams (*1956 in Los Angeles) explores systems of meaning and order. The seven photographs in the exhibition "Normative Models" are central examples of Williams' photographic practice: exemplary image types, often reminiscent of advertising from the 1960s, are replicated with a highly elaborate production process and attention to detail. The way they are presented draws focus to the various ways images and artworks are disseminated. This includes display structures, exhibition design, graphic communication, publications, and press materials. At the same time, the photographs reference the history of art, photography, and cinema, from Pop Art and Capitalist Realism to New Objectivity and Surrealism. Christopher Williams studied at the California Institute of the Arts in the late 1970s with John Baldessari, Douglas Huebler, and Michael Asher, among others.
